Rare 1958 BMW Isetta 600 Showcases Automotive Innovation at DFW Car & Toy Museum

The 1958 BMW Isetta 600, a jewel among microcars, stands as a testament to the innovative spirit of mid-20th century automotive design. Currently housed in the Ron Sturgeon Collection at the DFW Car & Toy Museum, this meticulously restored vehicle offers a unique window into the past, showcasing the technological advancements that have shaped the automotive industry.

Powered by a rear-mounted, air-cooled 582cc flat-twin engine, the Isetta 600 was capable of producing around 19.5 horsepower, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 62 miles per hour. Its introduction of independent semi-trailing arm rear suspension marked a significant engineering achievement, a feature that would later become a hallmark of BMW's renowned 3 Series.

The restoration of the Isetta 600 in 2015 brought the vehicle back to its original turquoise glory, with damaged components carefully replaced. This painstaking effort was recognized with several prestigious awards, including the 2017 AACA Grand National Award and the 2016 AACA National First Prize, underscoring the vehicle's historical and aesthetic significance.

Among its distinctive features are the front-opening, side-hinged door and an additional right-side passenger entry, alongside a hinged steering column, a 120-mph speedometer, and a floor-mounted shifter. Despite its innovative design, the BMW 600 faced considerable market challenges, leading to a limited production run of about 34,813 units before its discontinuation in 1959.
