Judge Bella Rubio

This week, Building Texas continues its tour of Real County, engaging in a conversation with Judge Bella Rubio, the County Judge. Judge Rubio emphasizes the vastness of Real County and the surge in tourism and countywide sales. While this might be considered a positive development, it also presents unique challenges for the region. Emergency Services takes precedence in our discussion as we delineate Judge Rubio's vision for Emergency Service Districts and their crucial role in managing the current stage of growth in Texas. Acknowledging the dedication of citizens who volunteer as fire and EMS members, it's important to note that tourists may be unaware of the voluntary nature of these services. Supporting a population spike of 100,000 people during the summer, drawn by tourism to the Frio River Valley, Nueces River Valley, or even Charles Lindbergh Park, strains the existing rural infrastructure, prompting the Judge to develop a vision that addresses the growth in sales while effectively managing the budget. As you listen to this insightful conversation, we encourage you to enjoy the journey, imagining the picturesque Swiss Alps of Texas unfolding around you.

Judge Rubio is a fourth-generation resident, born and raised in Real County. In 1996, she was elected to the position of County and District Clerk of Real County. During her tenure as Clerk, she served on several State-wide committees until retirement in 2016. In 2015, she was selected “Clerk of the Year” for the State of Texas by her Clerk colleagues. In 2018, she was honored and humbled to be elected as Real County’s first Hispanic and female judge.
